We scout at noon to read slip faces, then approach ridge-lines before blue hour. Tripods stay low; star tracker only engages when winds stay still. We never crest the leeward edge to keep shapes untouched.

- ISO 1600–3200, 15–20s, f/1.8 for star-rich skies.
- Sand sleeves over joints; silica gel rotated nightly.
- Compass bearings pre-marked; no GPS beacons left on dunes.
- Water cached in insulated bags to avoid dew on lenses when opened.
Light Discipline
Twilight gives contour; pure night gives contrast. We blend two exposures only when sky noise demands it—never for sky replacement. Headlamps stay in red mode to keep the ambient field unpolluted.
For moonlit nights we drop ISO to 800–1250 and shorten shutters to keep stars tight. If wind rises, we pause rather than force soft frames—silence over quantity.

- 14mm f/1.8 + tracker, 24mm prime for mid-ground structure.
- Low tripod with rock bag; sand socks for legs and clamps.

- Mesh pouches for silica; lightweight ground sheet for gear staging.
Field Log
Night 1: baseline dunes, no tracker to keep workflow simple. Night 2–3: tracked skies, focus stacking on foreground ripples. Night 4: wind event—shifted to documentary abstracts of blowing sand and waited out gusts.
Ethics: zero geo-tags for fragile dune basins; camp only on durable surfaces; pack-out includes all tape, batteries, and silica packets.
