We carry respirators, watch wind direction, and stay upwind of vents. Tripod legs are checked for heat warp; we keep exposures short when shimmer distorts frames.
- Shutter 1/125–1/500 for glowing lava to avoid blowout.
- Manual focus; AF hunts through heat waves.
- Never step on crusted lava; routes are pre-walked in daylight.
- CO/ SO₂ monitor clipped to harness; leave if alarms tick.
- Buddy checks every 10 minutes; heat caps on tripod when idle.
Color Discipline
Reds stay earned—no saturation spikes. We preserve the balance between incandescent flow and blue dusk, holding highlights with gentle underexposure.
Heat shimmer is embraced, not over-sharpened. We avoid clarity boosts on air glow; detail is pulled from RAW with gentle curves only.

- Lava Ribbon — 1/200s, f/4, protecting glow detail; CPL off.
- Vent Breath — 1/40s to trace steam motion without losing plume texture.
- Basalt Lace — sidelight on cooled ropey lava; micro-contrast added in RAW only.
- Crater Glow — distant tele frame to avoid heat; -0.7 EV to hold highlights.
Field Gear
- 24–70mm for versatility; 70–200mm to work from safe distance.
- ND for dusk flows, respirator, heat-resistant gloves.
- Boots with solid soles, headlamp with red mode, spare cloths.
- Aluminum tripod (less heat warp), spare lens cloths in sealed bag.
Field Log
Entry during golden hour, gear staged upwind. Short bursts near vents, then retreat to safer distance for long lenses. Cards sealed in dust-proof pouches. Exit before darkness to avoid disorientation on black lava.
Ethics: no rock collection, no drone flights over vents, no marking on lava crust. Respect closures and local guide instructions.
